Manuel Bailera awarded for the Best PhD Thesis in CO₂ Capture Technologies by PTECO2

The fifth edition of the PTECO₂ Awards was held on November 28, 2018, during the Annual Assembly of the Spanish Technological Platform for CO₂ (PTECO₂) at the headquarters of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) in Madrid.

Dr. Manuel Bailera Martín, from the University of Zaragoza, received the award for the Best PhD Thesis in CO₂ Capture Technologies for his work titled “Renewable Methane: Integrated Configurations of Power-to-Gas and Carbon Capture by Means of Renewable Energy Surplus” and supervised by Prof. Luis M. Romeo and Prof. Pilar Lisbona. The diploma was presented by Mr. Luis Díaz Fernández, President of PTECO₂.

In his thesis, Dr. Bailera investigated new hybrid configurations of Power-to-Gas (PtG) systems integrated with carbon capture technologies, aiming to enable large-scale energy storage through CO₂ reuse. These hybrid systems enhance PtG performance in terms of efficiency, resource utilization, and economic feasibility, helping to overcome current technical and financial barriers to the deployment of PtG plants. The results open new opportunities for the commercial use of CO₂ as a valuable resource in the energy transition.
