Our former team member, Javier Sáez de Guinoa, has been awarded the Best Doctoral Thesis Award in Civil Engineering and Environment, presented by the Cátedra de Grupo Mariano López Navarro at the University of Zaragoza.
Javier’s award-winning research focuses deeply on sustainability and the decarbonization of the alumina industry, a critical material used heavily in sectors like construction and transportation. This recognition highlights the core mission of ECO2Lab: driving real-world industrial sustainability through cutting-edge research.
This achievement marks the perfect conclusion to an exciting journey dedicated to industrial decarbonization under the supervision of his PhD advisors, Luis M. Romeo and Eva Llera.
A Beautiful Full-Circle Story
Beyond the academic achievement, this award holds a deeply personal and moving significance for Javier and his family. More than 60 years ago, Javier’s grandfather moved to the city in search of better opportunities and began working as a mason’s laborer for the exact same company (GRUPO MLN) that granted Javier this award. Thanks to that job, his grandfather was able to build a new life and support his family. Receiving this recognition from the same company generations later is a beautiful, full-circle connection, and Javier has dedicated this achievement to him.
