ECO2Lab Team Wins Repsol Foundation University Challenge Final

Five members of the ECO2Lab team — Cristian Barón, Alexander García, Javier Sáez de Guinoa, Jorge Legaz, and Inés Senante — proudly represented our group in the grand final of the Repsol Foundation University Challenge, held in Madrid on Saturday, March 9. Competing against 25 university teams from across the country, they presented innovative solutions to five key energy transition challenges.

Their outstanding work earned them first place in the “Sustainable and Decarbonized Industry” category, thanks to their project titled “Decarbonization of the Steel Industry through Biomass and Power-to-Gas”. The proposal assessed the technical and energetic feasibility of integrating multiple decarbonization strategies into steel blast furnaces, including the use of biomass and hydrogen from renewable sources. The team demonstrated that their approach could achieve up to a 60% reduction in CO₂ emissions without the need for geological storage — a promising pathway toward more sustainable heavy industry.

Congratulations to our students for this remarkable achievement and for showcasing ECO2Lab’s commitment to innovation and climate action!
