Universidad de Zaragoza

Associate Professor (2015-2025)

JAVIER FERNÁNDEZ was an Associate Professor of Physical Chemistry at the University of Zaragoza and a member of the ECO2Lab research group from its inception until his retirement in September 2025. He began his research career studying the thermodynamics of liquid mixtures of organic compounds at atmospheric pressure, but later shifted his focus to the thermodynamics of anthropogenic CO₂ and Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) technology. Over the past 15 years, his work concentrated on analyzing the influence of impurities on the behavior of anthropogenic CO₂—both in terms of the physico-chemical properties of the CO₂ plume and the operational parameters of CCS systems. His goal was to evaluate the feasibility of co-capturing CO₂ along with impurities, thereby avoiding the need for stream purification. Throughout his career, he participated in 30 research projects and co-authored more than 40 contributions to international journals and conferences.

Main interests: Carbon capture and storage, CO2 and impurities co-capture.
