On May 22, 2025, the “Energy and CO₂” research group from the Institute of Research in Engineering of Aragon (I3A – University of Zaragoza), in collaboration with the Spanish CO₂ Technology Platform (PTECO₂), organized a technical workshop in Zaragoza titled “Decarbonization of Industry: An Opportunity for Aragon”.
The event, held at the Zaragoza Chamber of Commerce, brought together nearly one hundred participants, including industry representatives, researchers, and public officials, to discuss the role of CO₂ Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) technologies in achieving industrial decarbonization.
Aragon, with its established industrial infrastructure and growing commitment to sustainability, is positioned as a key region for the development and application of CCUS technologies. The “Energy and CO₂” research group has been actively involved in analyzing the technical and economic aspects of these solutions, as well as exploring the potential of CO₂ as a raw material for new products.
The workshop featured presentations from various experts, including:
- Luis Miguel Romeo – Director of the “Energy and CO₂” research group, I3A
- Pedro Mora Peris – President of PTECO₂
- María Yolanda Vallés Cases – Director General of Energy and Mines, Government of Aragon
- María López Palacín – Vice President of the Zaragoza Chamber of Commerce
- Mª del Mar Paños de Arriba – Director General of Industrial Promotion and Innovation, Government of Aragon
The discussions emphasized the importance of accelerating the implementation of CCUS technologies to reduce carbon emissions in sectors such as chemicals, cement, lime, and steel. Participants highlighted the need for effective transposition of European regulations at the national level, simplification of administrative procedures, and the establishment of specific incentives to support the adoption of these technologies in Spain.
The event underscored the necessity for each company to assess the feasibility of CCUS solutions within their specific production processes, as decarbonization strategies may vary depending on sector-specific characteristics.
This workshop marks a significant step towards reinforcing Aragon’s leadership in industrial innovation and sustainability, promoting a cleaner and more competitive future for the region.
