ECO2Lab research on steelmaking decarbonization recognized by the Miguel Carreras Foundation

The award was presented by the Miguel Carreras Foundation to Cristian Barón Vidán, as an Accessit for his Master’s Thesis titled “Modelling of a Calcium-Looping plant: techno-economic comparison with other technologies in the iron and steel industry”. This marks the second recognition Cristian has received for this work, following another Accessit awarded by the Universidad de Zaragoza MLN Chair.

His research, co-supervised by Begoña Peña Pellicer and Pilar Lisbona, was supported through a grant from the INVESTIGO program. The project investigates different integrations of Power-to-Gas technologies, including CO₂ capture via Calcium Looping and biomass utilization, as pathways to decarbonize blast furnace-based steel production. The study underscores the strong potential of these approaches to achieve substantial reductions in CO₂ emissions within the steel industry.
