Havana, May 2026. Between 3 and 17 May, the partners of the REVIV-E project carried out their first technical visit to Cuba, marking the launch of the activities planned under this initiative, which aims to promote the sustainable use of biomass as a renewable energy source and strengthen the country’s energy resilience. The project is primarily funded by the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) and is led by the University of Zaragoza.
The visit brought together representatives from the University of Zaragoza, SODEPAZ, Curvados Quintín and Ecofricalia, the organizations forming the project consortium, together with Cubaenergía, a key institution for the development and promotion of biomass technologies in Cuba. During the two-week mission, technical meetings and site visits were held with beneficiary organizations to define upcoming activities and strengthen cooperation between Cuban and Spanish collaborating entities.
REVIV-E builds on the experience gained through the Mor-e project, sharing the objective of promoting the energy recovery of Cuba’s biomass resources and contributing to a more diversified and sustainable energy mix.
Among the planned actions is the installation of a pellet production plant at the National Botanical Garden, which will transform biomass residues into a renewable solid biofuel. In addition, biomass-based thermal systems will be installed in a bakery and at the La Pasiega pasta factory, in collaboration with the Food Industry Business Group. The project also foresees the installation of a pellet boiler at the Hotel Inglaterra, demonstrating the potential of this technology in the tourism sector.
Training and capacity building are another key component of REVIV-E. Meetings were held with the Higher Institute of Applied Sciences and Technologies (InSTEC) of the University of Havana, where a specialized diploma programme on biomass and bioenergy will be developed.
This first technical visit has laid the foundations for the activities to be implemented over the coming years, combining demonstration actions, technology transfer and specialized training to promote sustainable biomass-based energy solutions in Cuba.
