Research Team

ECO2Lab is a research group focused on developing innovative solutions for decarbonization through renewable energy, CO₂ capture, and utilization. We combine multidisciplinary research with technology transfer to advance the production of synthetic fuels and support a sustainable energy transition in key sectors such as industry and transportation.

Research for a decarbonized future

The Energy and CO2 Research Group, ECO2Lab, was established in 2015 with the aim of bringing together efforts from various backgrounds and institutions to develop and apply clean energy systems and decarbonisation solutions. ECO2Lab is one of the research groups recognised in our region and funded by the Government of Aragón. The members of the research group belong to different multidisciplinary institutes that brings together experts in Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Medicine, and Biochemistry, fostering opportunities for innovative scientific collaboration.

The common thread connecting ECO2Lab’s research lines is the role of carbon dioxide in energy production and use across a wide array of processes and applications. Our focus is on developing innovative concepts and optimizing existing processes to enable the decarbonization of different sectors in a way that is both economically viable and scalable.

Renewable energy and CO₂ utilization

The project contributes to the increased use of renewable biomass energy, combined with advancements in CO₂ reduction, capture, transport, storage, and utilization processes. A key focus is its application in energy storage, particularly through the combination of carbon dioxide with renewable hydrogen to produce synthetic fuels. These solutions are intended for impactful use in the industrial and automotive sectors.

Strategic research and multidisciplinary impact

This strategic initiative seeks to deepen scientific knowledge and achieve multidisciplinary outcomes across four research lines related to CO₂, aiming to enhance environmental sustainability and energy management. With strong technological, economic, environmental, and social relevance, the project aligns with the goals of Aragón’s II PAID and RIS3 strategies. It will foster participation from a growing team of researchers, enabling engagement in international projects, technology transfer with industry, and the generation of scientific outputs such as theses, publications, patents, and intellectual property rights.
